I've been writing a website and added some forms that all worked perfectly on my own web space. Once uploaded to my clients server they return the error message that I wrote in the PHP. I'm assuming there isn't an error in the code as like I said it does work on mine.

I need to connect to an external MySQL database and fetch some data. I have a few concerns about it:

1. Connecting to a remote server will increase the loading time of the page, I want that to be the lowest as possible.
2. The data I need to load is extra, if the remote server appears to be down I don't want to wait extra time (until it times out).

What are the best practices on connecting to a remote MySQL database using PHP? Basically, I want my website loading time to be affected as smallest as possible.

If it can't be done with PHP, I'm open to a different approach.

I wrote this code today but im getting this weird bug from it so at the start it tells you that your building level is 0 even though it says in database one. At this point you would think its a connection problem but then as i click upgrade the next page it will say level 1 shop and still level 0 farm but in the database what happens is the shop stays at lvl 1 and farm goes to lvl 0 from 1 then if you click upgrade on farm the opposite happens it shows on the page shop lvl 0 farm lvl 1 and in database it shows farm lvl 1 and shop lvl 0

I moved my WordPress install from a development server to a freshly installed CentOS Apache 2.2 PHP 5.3 server. Initially, everything was working well. Logging in wasn't a problem, but then I noticed after logging in as a WordPress user and loading a new page I would be logged out.

What PHP settings do I need to have enabled, or are there any other considerations, when using a fresh server for WordPress that would make users not able to stay logged in (almost like the session isn't saving them)?

Very simply, as a browser style UI, I'm trying to read two parameters (provided by user) in two textboxes, save them in a plain text file (specifically a csv but that's not important) on the server but not stopping there, to ensure that these has saved correctly, and as feedback to the user, I want to read the newly saved parameters back from the file into two other textboxes on the same page.

When the page loads, jquery successfully populates the "currently saved settings" textboxes with the values read in from the server csv file using php. When I enter new values and then click the [submit] button to save these values, the server file gets updated successfully.

And it is the next steps where the problem arises, I can use php to read the newly stored values back in from the server file and "alert" them to check that they are correct but the jquery lines to update the "currently saved settings" will not update. I have to refresh the webpage to get these textboxes to update. I should say that the "alerts" display the correct (newly saved) values so everything up to that point works fine it's just the following two jquery lines that work on page load don't seem to get executed at this point.

Hopefully there's something dead simple I'm missing here.

(The csv file itself is simply two parameters used by a complete separate and unrelated piece of software.)

By the way, this populate method is called six times, once per table. I've only showed one table here. The size of tables range from 20 rows to 21 million rows.

I'm trying to store a txt file in a php variable, I have the functionality working already, but there's one issue I cant really wrap my head around.

I want to read the file using variables as the name of such file, and when I do so, the script doesn't read the file, but when I explicitly code the name, it works ok.

I have the following code:

I edited the code thinking my variable $ar_mga[0] might have other characters, but still it doesn't work. Using this array, and the following code, I have different results:

EDIT: Seems I overlooked one huge detail, the $ar_mga[0] variable contained the value I was trying to use, but it was enclosed on a span tag (which I never saw until I examined the page html), and never worked because of this. Striping the tag from the variable made the script work correctly.

The issue I'm having is the username will only be detected if the @username isn't followed by punctuation, however if the $update is equal to "Hello @username, are you OK?" the query won't find a username equal to "username," and so throws an error.

Is there a way I can end the explode once any piece of punctuation exists? So rather than $explosion2 being equal to "username," it's equal to "username"?

So right now, if I try to input an e-mail that exists in the database into my form, I get the default error message for invalid e-mail, and not the "Email already in use." Even if I input a valid e-mail that does not exist in the database, the error message doesn't go away.

I'm guessing the problem is in my php file... I've tried using 'return true' and 'return false' but they also did not work. I changed my code to echo json_encode(FALSE) from answers to similar topics as this one. Would anyone be able to put a finger on what's going on here?

I am trying to make a windows 8 Store app that gets results from a MySQL database from a PHP page as a REST service.

I'm looking for the PHP to return a JSON representation of an array of strings and have done that happily when dong the same between Javascript and PHP. I need to take that same JSON string and use it in my C# Windows 8 store App, is there a way to take the return of that PHP page and convert it into a normal C# array, not a dictionary or more complex collection.

The database does have four fields so if i have to use a special object made for this i will, but I'd rather I didn't as this function doesn't require that amount of data.

The PHP page is like so - $search_text is passed in via a GET:

I am trying to come up with a smart way of controlling my web page rewrites with as few rewrites as possible.

So, for example, if you have the following page translations:

'domain.com/test/'        => 'domain.com/test.php'
'domain.com/errors/404/'  => 'domain.com/errors.php?code=404' 

You could have individual rewrites for every page... However, I like to minimise this by instead having one regular expression to suit all. So the regular expression to match the above would be:

^([a-z0-9\-]+)\/?([a-z0-9\-]+)?\/?$

and then the matches would be placed into the URL like so (note that code would be replaced by request on the errors page):

domain.com/$1.php?request=$2

and then you could append the query string...

Obviously in some cases you need individual rewrites, but you can usually minimise this by using clever regular expressions and well structured pages.

My Problem

Similar to the above example, I have pages within my site that are rewritten with this exact regular expression. So the following pages translate like so:

'domain.com/shipments/open/' => 'domain.com/shipments.php?request=open'
'domain.com/settings/user/'  => 'domain.com/settings.php?request=user'
etc...

However, for reasons which I will not go into, I also have pages written like so:

'domain.com/shipment/edit'

Notice the it says shipment not shipments! Despite this, I still want this to be rewritten to the shipments page. So the translation would look like this:

'domain.com/shipment/edit' => 'domain.com/shipments.php?request=edit'

I cannot think of a way other than another rewrite that specifies that shipment is an alias for shipments...

One of the reasons I do not want individual rewrites for this is that I am not just talking about shipments, there are many documents that I need to alias, and therefore would rather not go down the multiple rewrite route as my web.config file will get pretty darn large.

I have come up with the following solutions (but obviously I am not happy with them):

1. Have a page in my root directory called shipment.php and just include the contents of shipments.php
2. Write rewrites for each page with an alias...

I cannot think of another (better) way of doing this, can any of you?

I'm making a dating application, much like tindler. Users can like or dislike other users, and if two users both like each other they get the option to chat with eachother. Currently building the query to pull a random profile and one of their pictures at random:

Now here's where I'm confused.. I have a table for likes_dislikes that consists of user_id, foreign_user_id, and event_type (like, dislike).

If you disliked or liked a user already, I do not want them in my results. The only means I can think of handling this is to perform a second query which checks this, and then does another 'random' query if you have already liked/disliked them so that you only see users you haven't already rated. Is there a better way?

I'm trying to get an average of a value for the past 2 months, but not based on CURDATE()/NOW(). It would be dependent on what month the user was looking at in the application:

Ex: If I'm looking at May, I would want the average of April and March. If I'm looking at February, I would want the average of January and December (of the previous year).

I have a function that accepts the month and year of the page the user is on (it also accepts the emp_id, but that is irrelevant for this question).

Printing phpinfo() indicates that the php is being served by IIS:

The normal ways to restart IIS don't work on this box:

1. There is no menu item: Start menu -> point to Administrative Tools -> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager

2. Running inetmgr results in the error message Windows cannot find 'inetmgr'

3. There is no 'Internet Information Services' under Start -> Manage -> Services and Applications

IIS Reset does not work either:

C:\Program Files>iisreset /stop
'iisreset' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Looking for a process listening on port 80 using netstat -abno does not show any processes listening on port 80. However, going to http:<IP>/debug.php renders my the page (and therefore something must be listening on port 80 to serve the page).

Environment

• Windows Server 2003
• PHP Version 5.3.10
• User has admin rights (confirmed using this method)

Misc

• The phpinfo() says the php.ini file is located at C:\Windows
• This machine also has Apache installed on it (but it is using a different port). I assume this has nothing to do with the above problem, but it seemed odd to have 2 different web servers on the same machine, so I thought I'd mention it.

Please let me know if there is any other information that I can provide.

I use ajax to call a php file to do the sql query. When the user press a button, the php file does some queries including one select and two insert. It works fine when the user press the button for the first time. In the second time, only the select query and the first insert query works, the second insert query does not insert anything. I have checked the query, it is all fine. It seems by some reason the second insert query is not executed.

I've had this problem bending my mind for a while now (head cold doesn't help either!), basically I have a PHP array which looks like this example:

And I would like to be able to produce from this a table with every possible combination of these, but without repeating any combinations (regardless of their position), so for example this would output

But I would like for this to be able to work with as many different arrays as possible.
